Channeling My Inner Mr. Rogers

Last week, I received an email from the school director requesting an introduction video for the parent orientation meeting. My first submission was a rather formal video, with me wearing a tie and formally addressing the parents. However, the director felt the video was “too serious!”

The director offered the following guidance:

“For kindergarteners—especially beginners—it’s all about having FUN. Could you record a video that is as energetic and smiley as possible? You can wave your hands, use gestures, or vary your tone of voice.”

I put on my thinking cap and realized I needed to channel my inner Mr. Rogers. I visited the library and picked up a few books about Colorado and Korea. After several attempts, I finally created a video I felt good about:

Could this really be my natural calling?

The director’s feedback afterward was incredibly encouraging:

“We did orientation last night, and they really liked your video. I hope that you bring George with you!”

My plan has always been to take Monkey George with me. I may be 50 years old, but I still sleep with a stuffed animal—Monkey George! He has always been a wonderful traveling companion. Here’s a throwback to when I moved from Virginia to Colorado…

Stay tuned for more adventures with Mr. Phillip and Monkey George!
