Teaching is a relationship.

Everyone in the room is still learning.

I believe students learn best in classrooms built on respect, trust, meaningful challenge, and the freedom to make mistakes.

Over the years, I have taught mathematics, music, technology, and English. The ages, subjects, and settings have changed, but the purpose has remained consistent: help another person approach something difficult with greater understanding and confidence than they had before.

My role is not simply to provide answers. It is to help learners connect what they already know to what they are ready to understand next—and to keep learning from them as I refine my own craft.

Respect the learner

The first responsibility of a teacher is to create a community in which people can learn together. That begins with respect: for the teacher, for each student, for individual differences, and for the environment we share.

Students arrive with different histories, abilities, interests, and relationships with school. Some enter confident. Others already believe they are going to fail. Meeting students where they are does not mean lowering expectations. It means finding an honest starting point and building from it deliberately.

Sometimes that requires another explanation, a different example, guided practice, or a conversation about what is happening beyond the classroom. Students are more than the work they produce. Caring about their learning means caring enough to notice.

Respect also works in both directions. I ask students to be patient with me because I am still learning too—about them, about the material, and about how to make the next explanation clearer than the last. When students know they will be treated with dignity, they become more willing to ask questions, attempt unfamiliar work, and admit when they do not understand.


Learn through challenge, mistakes, and one another

Whether a student is solving an equation, reading an unfamiliar word, writing a sentence, or learning a piece of music, mistakes provide information. They reveal what the learner understands, where the process broke down, and what needs to happen next.

I want students to feel safe enough to try before they know exactly how to succeed. In mathematics, I often gave students access to answers so they could check their progress and troubleshoot their own work. The answer became a destination rather than a verdict. Students could retrace their reasoning, locate the mistake, talk it through with a classmate, and try again.

This is also why I do not see a teacher as the source of all knowledge. I see the teacher as a facilitator, guide, listener, and fellow learner. Students frequently explain ideas to one another in language that feels more immediate than a teacher’s explanation. My responsibility is to provide enough structure for them to begin, then pay attention to the questions, recurring mistakes, and moments when understanding appears.

While I am teaching students, they are continually teaching me how they learn.


Make understanding useful

Learning is more than remembering a sequence of steps. Mastery begins when students can use an idea, explain their reasoning, connect it to previous learning, or apply it in a situation they have not seen before.

Music taught me that progress comes through patient, attentive practice. Software development taught me to break complicated problems into manageable parts and keep testing possible solutions. Mathematics taught me to value reasoning and precision. Teaching English has reminded me how much courage even a simple conversation can require.

Teaching is a craft, and craftsmanship requires reflection. After a lesson, I ask what worked, where students struggled, which explanation made something click, and what I should change next time. A lesson is not finished simply because it has been taught; it is finished when I have learned something from it too.

Education should prepare students not only to complete an assignment, but to approach the next unfamiliar problem with curiosity and confidence.


Teaching and technology

My classroom experience and software background come together in the educational tools I build. The ESL Lesson Builder grew from a practical question: how can technology reduce repetitive preparation work without reducing teaching to a formula?

The goal is not to replace a teacher’s judgment or creativity. It is to offer a stronger starting point—one teachers can adapt to their students, classrooms, and the particular moment of learning in front of them.

Learn carefully. Build thoughtfully. Create something useful for someone else.

The work continues

I know I have taught effectively when students begin making connections for themselves: when they apply an idea in a new situation, explain something to one another, or ask a question I cannot immediately answer—and we find the answer together.

Teaching has never made me feel that I have mastered learning. It has shown me how much more there is to understand.

That may be the lesson I value most.
